WHISTLER, NORTH AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR SKI RESORT
Whistler Blackcomb is one of the best known ski resorts in the world and as host to the 2010 Olympics it's reputation continues to grow. Situated in the costal mountain range of British Columbia, Whistler is just a 45 minute drive from the Pacific Ocean which contributes to the area's high snowfall and renowned powder skiing. Made up of two previously independent resorts, Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain, the now combined resort of Whistler Blackcomb has 8,100 acres of skiing making it the largest ski resort in North America. Whistler Blackcomb is renowned not just for fantastic snow conditions but also for the high level of services visitors can expect from fast modern lifts and great mountain restaurants to world class terrain parks and half pipes. The area also has one of the longest winter seasons in North America although the local mountain biking is world class and many past NONSTOP Seasonaires have spent the summer in Whistler enjoying the hot weather and bike park.
THE MOUNTAIN
Whistler Blackcomb has over 12 alpine bowls to choose from; 8,100 acres of terrain; 200 marked trails and 33 lifts making it one of the largest places in the world to spend a season. The massive snowfall makes it an ideal location for those keen on experiencing “West Coast powder” unlike that found in Europe or Eastern Canada. The terrain is varied and challenging which makes it perfect for instructor training with groomed pistes for practicing teaching techniques and more challenging areas of gladded trees and alpine powder bowls for concentrating on your personal technique.
Whistler Blackcomb continues to be at the forefront of ski and snowboard development, with a reputation for being at the centre of freeriding and freestyle. The Nintendo Terrain Parks contain two well maintained half pipes, a floodlit pipe open at night and park runs designed for all ability levels. By the end of your time here you will be hitting the XL run on a regular basis! Continual development is central to the resort’s success both on and off the mountain contributing to the decision for it to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Whether it’s steep chutes open bowls, deep powder or huge terrain parks Whistler Blackcomb really does have it all to offer.
THE RESORT
Being a truly international ski resort Whistler Blackcomb attracts skiers from all around the world. It's a popular destination with all nationalities especially the Brits, Japanese, Australians and of course Canadians from Vancouver and other west coast communities. With over 200 shops there is plenty to distract you whilst you are off the mountain, ranging from the major suppliers like North Face to Whistler’s own Mountain Ski Company. On the food side the 90 plus restaurants on and off the mountain offer every type of food imaginable from Mexican to Greek and Italian.
As far as après ski is concerned Whistler Blackcomb has got all needs catered for, be it table top dancing at Merlin’s, relaxing with the locals at Dusty’s or partying the night away at Tommy Africa’s. If you want a total break from skiing the options are endless, a trip to one of the cinemas, spas, art galleries or museums are just some of the possibilities. Or you could try something a bit more active like snowmobiling, heli-skiing, or rock-climbing.
ACCOMMODATION
NONSTOP Skiseasonaires live in comfortable, modern and well equipped houses. The properties are homely and spacious and range in size from between two to four bedrooms (four to eight people). Most seasonaires will share a twin room although there are a limited number of single rooms available. Couples applying together will be offered a private double room - please ring the office for details. NONSTOP Ski will endeavour to place those of similar ages in the same accommodation. Each house has a communal living area with comfy sofas, fireplace, TV, DVD and stereo. Plus each house has a spacious dinning area and well equipped kitchen where you can prepare weekend meals.
PRE AND POST STAYS
For those who are keen to spend a longer amount of time in Whistler we may be able to offer flexible flight dates and additional accommodation before and after the course. This is a great chance to enjoy early season powder days and to get some practice in before your course starts. You can arrive in Whister anytime from early December and stay as late as early May. Additional accommodation is charged on a weekly basis and includes all utility bills and assistance from local staff. Your season ski pass is valid from the time you arrive in Whistler.
MEALS
For you to make the most of your time on snow it's important that you eat well. NONSTOP provide healthy, hearty and fine tasting suppers each weekday night. Most of these are held in the comfort of your own home in addition to several nights spent at popular local restaurants. For the weekends that you aren't involved in one of our weekend trips away, you can either prepare a meal at your house or eat out at one of Whistler’s many restaurants.
THE COACHES
Working with the Whistler Blackcomb Winter Sports School, North America 's largest, NONSTOP Skihave an experienced team of instructors all of whom have been selected for their experience in coaching similar programmes and for their extensive local knowledge. They will ensure that you are enjoying the best conditions on the mountain and take you to those 'secret stashes' of untracked powder. All of our coaches are not only great instructors but also qualified examiners, so you'll be well prepared for the instructor assessments as well as the famous powder and challenging off-piste terrain.
WEEKEND TRIPS
We offer a wide range of weekend trips designed to ensure that you leave the course with a good knowledge of the local area and the various experiences on offer. Included in the programme cost are twenty “activity credits” which you can use to select the trips you wish to attend. Additional credits can be purchased for CD$60.
GUIDED BACKCOUNTRY TOURING (2 CREDITS)
A day exploring the famed and much filmed Whistler backcountry. This is a great chance to apply the skills learnt during your avalanche course and find your own fresh tracks.
CAT-SKIING (7 CREDITS)
A chance to put your powder skills to the test in the untracked bowls and tree runs of Whistler's backcountry. A typical day includes 6-8 runs with lifts in a 'piste-basher' to the summit. Hassle free powder heaven!
SNOWMOBILING (4 CREDITS)
A favourite Canadian pastime, snowmobiling is an awesome experience and a great way to enjoy Whistler's spectacular backcountry scenery. Led by professional guides, this half-day tour will teach you the skills to safely operate your own snowmobile.
VANCOUVER WEEKEND (5 CREDITS - TBC)
One of the highlights of our Whistler course is the weekend in Vancouver, enjoying some time in the big city, watching an NHL Ice Hockey match and making the most of the city's nightlife. The next day for those who are up for it we head to one of Vancouver's local ski hills - Cypress, Grouse or Seymour - which have great parks and groomers.
HUSKY RIDING (CREDITS - TBC)
Join a team of world class Alaskan huskies and travel through the spectacular Soo Valley Wildlife Reserveon, close to Whistler. This is an adrelanline filled activity - leave your preconceptions at home.
HELI-SKIING (10 CREDITS)
British Columbia is home to 90% of the world's heli and cat skiing operations and the Whistler area naturally hosts many of them. This day heli skiing includes three runs covering upto 2300 vertical feet of fresh powder.
