Fernie

Meet The Team

We pride ourselves on employing the best in the business. Nearly all our staff are Canadian or local to Fernie and can thus give you a valuable insight into the real Fernie life; far more than some UK rep who has only just arrived in the resort. We consistently hear that our staff made the course even better than could be expected and hope you feel the same after your course.

Residential staff

Dave Richards

Canadian Operations Director

What Dave doesn't know about NONSTOP isn't worth knowing!

A bit of a lynch pin in the NONSTOP machine, Dave has been instrumental in shaping the character and structure of our programmes from the very beginning. He started skiing almost three decades ago and has made a career out of the ski industry, skiing and working in various resorts throughout Europe and North America. He finally settled in Fernie because of the great community, the breathtaking scenery, and in his opinion some of the best skiing in the world!

As an ex ski instructor and cat ski guide Dave's knowledge of our resorts, particularly Fernie, is second to none and he can always find the best snow. In summer he runs his white water rafting and kayaking company while planning for the next winter season as well. All in all he's a pretty busy guy but he always has a ready smile (he's not called smiley Dave for nothing) and happily shares his vast knowledge of the mountains.

Jenny Mitchell

Ski Resort Host

Jenny will always be on hand

Jenny is originally from the UK but spent a season in Fernie 6 years ago... and then never left!  Without a doubt, Jenny has been considered one of the locals for many years and has worked as an instructor at the ski hill for the majority of her time out in Fernie.   Luckily for us, she has now decided to join the NONSTOP ranks and we are delighted to have her on our team; Jenny's knowledge of Fernie and first hand experience and knowledge on becoming an instructor and working in a ski school will be invaluable to you during your stay.  Whilst you are on your course in Fernie, Jenny will be on hand to help answer any questions, organise your trips and of course; socialise with you!

The Instructors

We have an excellent team of instructors in Fernie all of whom have been selected for their experience in coaching our programmes and for their extensive local knowledge. They will ensure that you are enjoying the best conditions on the mountain and take you to all those 'secret stashes' of untracked powder. You will have lift line priority during your lessons so on the rare occasion that there are lift queues you will be able to maximise your time on the slopes.

The NONSTOP Ski Coaches

Jens Mende

Technical Director

Jens heads up our ski programme in Fernie

Jens is the Technical Director for all NONSTOP Ski's programmes in Fernie and has been responsible for shaping the culture and content of our courses since 2002. Jens has been instructing for 25 years, is a CSIA level 4 instructor, a level 2 race coach and has been a CSIA examiner for 19 years! He has been director of various ski schools in Western Canada and coached ski racing in New Zealand and Fernie. Fernie is Jens' home town where he spends his summers running a custom home building business. Jen's specialises in matching equipment requirements to skiers' needs and if you're buying new skis or boots you will be sure to benefit from his experience.

Jono Squires

Level 4 Ski Instructor

One of the best!

Having grown up in Calgary Jono has his CSIA level 4, level 2 Race coach and CASI level 2. He has spent 16 seasons as a ski instructor in Canada, Europe and Australia and has been on the NONSTOP team from the beginning. As our resident philosopher his lessons usually include some pearl of wisdom on life and skiing such as, "You can have a lot of fun in the back seat, but you gotta get up front to drive." Take note, in his sessions, be ready to Giv’er! (That’s ‘Go large’ to you and me.)

Chris Ebbern

Level 3 Ski Instructor

Freestyle specialist

Chris hails from the big hills of Barrie, Ontario. He started skiing age 13 but due to hockey commitments he couldn't fulfil his desires until he moved out West. Once there Chris took on the challenge of the big playground and has since been all over the world competing and coaching. A freeskier at heart he loves to take on whatever’s in front of him! Now living in Fernie full time he enjoys everything the mountain has to offer.

Wendy McIntyre

Level 4 Instructor & Examiner

A legend!

A bit of a legend, Wendy is a Level 4 CSIA Instructor and Examiner, Level 2 Coach and a former ‘Canadian Demo Team’ member. Her skiing career started young as a racer and continued later as a coach, instructor and examiner so that she now has 25 years plus teaching experience! Her passion for skiing has seen her working across Canada from east to west into the US and 'down under'. Her philosophy in life? "Do not go where the path may lead, go where there is no path and leave a trail." Amen!

Louis Bourgeois

Level 4 ski instructor

New kid on the block!

Louis is from Québec, the province where it’s winter 12 months a year! For this reason, since he was born he's skied, snowboarded, crosscountry skied and ice skated so learned gliding before walking! He's a level 4 CSIA and level 2 race coach, and is ready to share his knowledge and passion on the slopes.

Colleen Dunn

Level 3 Ski Instructor

Super Experienced

With 27 years of ski instructing experience behind her Colleen is one of the most experienced instructors available. Having taught in Japan and spent three seasons in Switzerland she now lives in Fernie with her family. Colleen has been on the Rossignol Pro Team for 13 years, has been an equipment tester for Ski Canada magazine for 6 years and has been a Board Member of the CSIA for 12 years. In short, we’re lucky to have her!

Simon Piney

Level 3 ski instructor

Simon spent his childhood in Switzerland, living there for 20 years, being brought up on skis. After university and 15 years working in finance in London, he moved with his family to Fernie and trained with NONSTOP to become a ski instructor. Apart from being an avid skier and mountain biker, Simon helps run Fernie Search and Rescue, responding to backcountry emergencies.

Check out Simon's story here.
