INTENSIVE 3 WEEK IMPROVEMENT FOR YOUR SKI SKILLS
PICTURE THIS...You're standing at the top of an untouched tree run with fresh powder up to your knees. The sun is shining and the trees around you are heavily laden with fresh snow…How will you fare?
OVERVIEW
If you're looking for a winter holiday with a difference, which focuses on really improving your skiing in a fun and sociable environment, then our ski improvement courses are for you. The three week course is perfect for anyone wanting to spend a good amount of time on snow and seriously improve their skiing. You will also get the chance to go on the adrenaline filled activity of cat-skiing and learn valuable mountain skills on the optional avalanche awareness course. This course runs over New Year and after skiing with our professional coaches in the Fernie powder you'll be tearing through conditions and terrain you previously thought impossible!
COACHING
Our ski improvement courses will significantly develop your skiing whilst teaching useful mountain safety skills enabling you to ski off-piste with confidence. You will receive five hours of coaching per day, four days per week. Our instructors are carefully hand picked for their coaching experience and knowledge of the local terrain. They will develop your all-mountain technique, teaching you on the piste, through moguls and crud, down tree runs and in the powder.
During the coaching you will be videoed skiing in all conditions and over après ski drinks your coach will provide helpful analysis and feedback. We arrange a boot fitting evening at the start of the course to ensure you're using the correct equipment (many of our clients have received invaluable help and found their skiing improved hugely simply due to changes in their foot beds and liners).
CAT SKIING
One of the highlights of the courses is a day cat skiing. Similar to heli-skiing, but travelling up hill in 'snow cats/piste bashers', cat-skiing is the ultimate powder experience but at half the cost of heli-skiing. You'll get about 8-9 runs in through the day and the trips up in the cat offer welcome rest breaks and a chance to share stories with your powder companions! Held on the final weekend this experience provides the perfect opportunity to test your newly developed skills in the untracked powder of the Fernie backcountry. (Although unadvised, if you are on a tighter budget you can forfeit the cat-skiing experience and save £150 off the course price).
MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING
In addition to your on-snow coaching we teach essential backcountry techniques including safe off-piste travel, avalanche awareness and search and rescue techniques. This optional one day course is an additional £40 and includes some indoor theory as well as tuition in the backcountry digging snow pits and becoming familiar with safety equipment.
SKI MAINTENANCE
A comprehensive evening session covering ski design and construction plus tuning and maintenance techniques including base preparation, edge sharpening and waxing.
FERNIE
"North America's Coolest Town" - Rolling Stone Magazine
Fernie is renowned for some of the best powder conditions in the world, empty pistes and its friendly laid-back atmosphere. Fernie is a strong contrast to the busier mega resorts and offers a truly refreshing winter holiday experience.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
In 2007 we purchased the Red Tree Lodge and completed a $1.3 million renovation to make this ‘the place to stay in Fernie’. The lodge offers a relaxed and comfortable place to rest your weary legs after a hard days skiing. Most rooms are twin rooms (two double/queen beds) but we also have a limited number of triple and quad rooms as well. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and stunning mountain views. To find out about our lodge please: For those wanting a more independent experience we offer the chance to live in a house in downtown Fernie just a few minutes walk from the bars and shops on the main street and from the NONSTOP lodge. Living in a house will allow more space, privacy and self-sufficiency than living in the lodge. Those living in houses will still be able to enjoy and use all the facilities at the lodge. Each house sleeps between 4 and 8 people and has a comfortably furnished sitting room (with TV, DVD player and stereo), dining area and fully equipped kitchen. Most people share twin rooms although there are a limited amount of single rooms, offered on a ‘first come, first served' basis for an additional charge. Our top chefs provide weekday breakfasts and dinners that are served at the Red Tree Lodge. Our popular breakfasts offer an array of continental style treats, with freshly baked muffins, breads, cereals, porridge, yougurt and fresh fruit. Our suppers are healthy and filling, with 3 delicious courses designed to rejuvenate all those tired muscles. The NONSTOP shuttle bus will pick you up from the lodge after breakfast to take you to the mountain for another day on the slopes.
NEW YEAR'S EVE
New Year's Eve in the mountains is always fun and we arrange a party starting with a special dinner before enjoying music, dancing and celebrations to bring in the New Year.
FLIGHTS
Our package includes flights from the UK to Calgary with Air Canada. A UK member of staff will be on hand at Heathrow to see you off. You'll then be welcomed into Canada by a course director, before taking the transfer bus to Fernie. We can arrange alternative flight dates for those who are staying in Canada before and/or after their course. Normally there is no additional charge for this, but please check with us for further details. In the unlikely event that direct flights are unavailable we will inform you of this and then look to book an indirect flight. It is worth noting that the earlier you book your course the more likely we can secure a direct flight.
