  CASE STUDIES
THE WORDS OF THOSE WHO HAVE DONE IT

At the end of our courses we ask our clients to fill out a questionnaire. Here are the responses from a selection of people who took a career break to come on our course.

SCOTT & KATHRYN ROBINSON
Scott and Kathryn Robinson (mid 30's) came on the Fernie 11 week 2004/05 course.

1. What was your occupation before you came on a NONSTOP Ski & Snowboard course?
I was a Technical Director / Computer Programmer and Kathryn was a college lecturer.

2. What is your occupation now?
Same for me and Kathryn is now a ski instructor and runs first aid courses when back in the UK at the college she worked at before.

3. What made you decide to take a career break or look for a career change?

Kathryn was looking to get into ski instructing and we cam accross the NONSTOP course

4. How long was your career break?
6 months

5. Did you leave your job in order to come on the course or were you given a sabbatical?
I was given a sabbatical and Kathryn resigned from her job.

6. How many years were you working before you came on the course?

18 years in total although only 5 at the current company for me and Kathryn had been at the teaching at the college for 7 years.

7. As a career breaker what was it about NONSTOP that appealed to you?
The fully inclusive package, which meant all we had to worry about, was getting to and from the airport. Also the mix of age groups meant we wouldn't be the only 30 somethings!

8. From making the decision to take a career break, how long did it take you to book on to NONSTOP?
For us it was the reverse, we found NONSTOP and decided to take a career break to go on it.

9. What were your main hurdles? E.g. mortgage, relationship, family
Finding someone to look after our dog but my mum loved the thought of having Bailey for 3 months so much so she is doing it again this winter!

10. Has taking a career break affected your career?

No.

15. Would you do anything differently if you could take your career break again?
No.

16. What was the best thing you gained from your career break?

Found that we liked Fernie so much that we have brought a property in Fernie!

PAUL EGAN
Paul Eagan, aged 48, was on our 11 week Red Mountain course in 2004/05.
1. What was your occupation before you came on a NONSTOP Ski & Snowboard course?
Retail Manager

2. What is your occupation now?
Project Manager

3. What made you decide to take a career break or look for a career change?
After 26 years+ with company I was ready for a break plus a challenge.

4. How long is your career break?
4 months

5. If on a career break, did you leave your job in order to come on the course or were you given a sabbatical?
I was allowed a career break

6. How many years were you working before you came on the course?
26 years

7. As a career breaker what was it about NONSTOP that appealed to you?
The complete package, the opportunity to gain instructor qualifications and partake in other activities such as backcountry skiing, cat skiing, avalanche and first aid.

8. How career break friendly did you find the Adventure travel market?
Most were aimed at gap year students but NONSTOP covered everyone.

9. Were you conscious of not wanting to be the oldest on the course?

Slightly conscious but my mind was put to rest with the info from Melissa prior to booking.

10. From making the decision to take a career break, how long did it take you to book on to NONSTOP?
I talked about a career break for almost a year but once my mind was made up Id booked within 4 weeks.

11. What were your main hurdles? E.g. mortgage, relationship, family

Ensuring my finances were in place to cover any bills although internet banking made this quite easy. Luckily I have a very supportive family who played a large part in my final decision whether to go.

12. Did you have to make any sacrifices?
Knowing that although my job with my company was safe there was no guarantee that I would return to the same job that I left.

13. Has taking a career break affected your career?
Since returning I have changed roles onto specialist projects which I am really enjoying. The time away from work has given me more focus and drive.

14. Would you do anything differently if you could take your career break again?
A longer break would have been preferred, 6months at least.

15. What was the best thing you gained from your career break?

New friends, ski qualifications, better skier and the realisation that there are other things outside of work!
