Lizzy Webster - Ski Guide for SET (Sport & Educational Travel)

I had a fantastic week ski guiding for Sport and Educational Travel in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria.

Since completing my CSIA Level 2 in 2006 I’ve never used the qualification, so was a little apprehensive but I worked with a lovely school from Suffolk; the staff welcomed me into the team immediately and the kids were friendly, helpful and couldn’t wait to learn.

For most of the week I taught the second-top group, aged 13 to 16. They progressed so much, and by the end of the week their confidence was tremendous - skiing fast all day including steep blacks and moguls. It hardly felt like work at all!

Working with school groups like this is a fantastic way of teaching skiing without committing to a whole season. I’m going out again in March with Interski to teach for a week in Italy and I’d definitely work for SET again.

Philip Hunnable - Ski Guide for SET (Sport & Educational Travel)

I had a great time in Austria, it was nice to put the skills I learnt into use. The kids were good, very well behaved and the teachers were a good laugh although I had to work on getting them to stop calling me sir.

Experience wise it was really useful as I worked with all the groups beginners, low intermediates and advanced meaning I got to go from the basics, how to stand up, to utilising carving on steeper slopes and icy conditions. We did a little bit of video coaching and various fun exercises such as follow the leader and group warm ups (ski gymnastics).

Some of the highs included: teaching the advanced skiers how to pull a 360; persuading a girl in tears from vertigo onto a slope, helping her through a few turns and then watching her whiz down with a big smile on the face; taking a group down the world cup run.The only low was the holiday ending.

So, excellent snow, 4 different resorts to choose from in the Amade region, brilliant sunshine every day (but not warm enough to melt the snow), a great hotel with good food and various fun activities including bowling (where I let the kids team down by being useless) and swimming. Overall a great experience. Highly recommended!

Ski Instructor, Ian Stewart sends news from his season…

Marilyn and I are are having a lot of fun meeting new friends and I can’t believe how quickly the season is flying by. The weather has been exceptionally good for the most part and we’ve been able enjoy our days on the mountain whilst taking in the sights and sounds of wonderful Vancouver.

Marilyn has just started helping with the tots programme (exhausting) so it’s given us the chance to work in the same area and she gets a free pass. Teaching is going well and I’ve really enjoyed it. I can’t believe I only have 4 weeks left teaching in the resort.

I was lucky enough to have a bluebird day on my birthday (Monday 18th) so I hiked one of the local peaks with some friends did some sunbathing then we ripped it to the bottom.

I have a few day’s free now (need a rest) so we’re going up to Whistler for 3 day’s with friends. We’re planning to go and hit a few other resorts from the end of March until the end of the season with some fellow instructors. Big White, Silver Star, Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, Kicking Horse, Fernie, Lake Louise, Sunshine, Norquay, It should take about 3 weeks.

Lorna (my daughter) is doing her Level 1 this week in Fernie. On Monday she was stretchered off the hill by ski-doo after a heavy fall and went to hospital for some x-rays. I’m glad to say there were no broken bones and she is able to continue with her course. (keep going Lorna)!!
