Fernie 11-Week Ski and Snowboard Instructor Course ‘09 – Week 3
by James Le Couillard
I will start by reiterating some of Adam’s comments from the last post.
I too came out early and don’t regret that decision for a second. It gave me time to find my way round and get use to life ‘The Canadian Way’ which is very chilled btw. I was able to demo several sets of skis before making a choice and buy any equipment i didn’t have, all while the course hadn’t started.
Now that the course has started for proper there is alot going on, constantly! It may seem like sales blurb, but it is called NonStop for a reason. The main thing which takes up large portions of the time is the Ski Instruction. The Instructors are a great laugh and really helpful, my skiing is improving at a rapid rate. Falling / crashing / wiping out is common (everyone does it – some more than others) and sometimes its hurts, but no pain no gain!
Apart from the skiing during the day there are the credit activities which take place over Fridays and weekends each week. Snow mobiling and dog sledding are both awesome fun and there are trips coming up to Calgary and other ski resorts in both Canada and USA.
If you still have energy left over at the end of a hard days skiing, then there are multiple things you can do at the College Of The Rockies. Every Tuesday I go Rock Climbing and have a wicked time – as exhausting as it is.
On top of all of this there are the classroom sessions / tech sessions which cover everything from ski tuning to Avalanche Safety. And of course all the movie nights, parties and hockey games make the weeks fly by.
So here’s to the remaining 9 weeks of the course!
